How to choose the right wedding videographer for you

July 14, 2016

The popularity of wedding videography is rapidly growing and so is the variety of filmmakers out there.

With so many different styles available how do you choose the right wedding videographer for you?

Here are my top 3 tips to help you make the right decision…

1. Watch sample films

Wedding videographers generally publish a 3-5 minute cinematic trailer on their websites showing the highlights of the weddings they’ve filmed. These are an excellent starting point in determining the style of your wedding film. Ask yourself the following… Are any of the scenes set up? Are the bride and groom being asked to act? Is the film made up of natural, unobtrusive shots? What would you prefer? Some couples love the spotlight while others shy away from it.

2. Does size matter?

If you’re a camera enthusiast or budding filmmaker, you may be interested to know what kit your wedding videographer will be using on your big day. Does expensive equipment equal a better film though? I’ve seen some beautiful wedding films shot on fairly inexpensive DSLRs and some less than impressive ones filmed with huge video cameras, rigs and drones. Anyone can point a camera, you need to find a videographer with a flair for filming, so that they can infuse your wedding film with emotion. In essence, they need to be filmmakers, not just videographers.

3. Question question question

Any good wedding videographer will be more than happy to talk to you about their services whether it be face-to-face, over the phone or via email. Take this opportunity to get to know them. Do you get along? Is this someone you’ll be happy to have at your wedding? Will they wear jeans or a suit? Ask as many questions as you can as you want to be sure you’re compatible with them.
